As we approach thevisualCollective V2.0 trip to Page, Zion, and other awesome places unknown, I have been thinking about what lessons I learned on the last trip (to Death Valley) and how I can improve my experience this time.
Lessons I learned:
1) Bring a backup _______. In my case, it was “pair of pants,” because I sacrificed my only pair to the trip on the first day. I had a kilt as a backup - but it would have been nice to have an extra pair of pants
2) Bring less useless stuff. We brought a lot of gear that nobody used on the last trip. Even though it was efficiently packed, we still could have freed up a LOT of space by simply leaving the stuff at home. When in doubt, don’t bring it.
3) Roll with the punches. Having the correct attitude makes a world of difference when you’ve just destroyed your only pair of pants for the next four days, or when some of the group gets lost, or basically things to awry in any way.
4) Get ALONE TIME!!! At the end of the last trip, I hated everyone in the history of the world. Ever. In order to function, I need time alone to recharge, think, and do my own thing. Being surrounded by 8 or 12 of your closest friends means getting alone time takes conscious effort. This time, I’m going to take at least 30 minutes every day to get away from my companions and listen to music, walk on my own, whatever.
5) Shoot more! There is no “I wish I had my camera” on this trip. You have it. Make the images happen. Period. As soon as you get back, you will think to your self, “Damn, I wish I had done ______.”
That’s all for now. Do you have any suggestions? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Leave a comment below and join the discussion!
Cheers,
Matt Beaty
