Hey everybody! Just wanted to share a quick tip to improve your metering in difficult situations or when a hand-held meter or grey card just aren't available...

The solution? Be a man, use your hand...

No, really. put your camera on spot metering, light your hand in the same light as your subject and meter your palm. (above photo was taken by accident while metering at Willow Beach on our recent Death Valley adventure).

It's not exactly 18% grey, and not as good as a grey card or limited edition tvC color checker shirt, but it is darn close, and yours truly, Señior Photographía, has used it for years with great success. See above photo. (Credit: Taja Cantlon)
